Andy Cole Number 9 Postion : Forward Born 15 Oct 71
Andy started his footballing career with Arsenal as a schoolboy but even though he made it into the England schoolboys team , he was sold to Bristol City for �500,000. He stayed at Bristol for only a short time before he was bought by Newcastle for �1.7 million. At Newcastle , Andy became famous for the large amount of goals scored and it was this that must have attracted Alex Ferguson to spend �7 million to bring him to Old Trafford. Unfortunately, Andy did not have a good start at United mainly due to a high expectation because of the large amount of money spent on him and the fact he was no longer the only goal scorer. However, the 96/97 season has seen a new Andy Cole and things can only get better.
Teddy Sheringham Number 10 Position : Forward Born 24 June 1966
Teddy's first footballing job was at Millwall as a trainee making his first team debut in 1984. He moved to Nottingham Forest next for �2 million but only lasted 13 months before he moved to Tottenham Hotspur for �2.1 million. Now he has signed for United for �3.5 million. When Klinsmann teamed up with Teddy at Spurs he described him as one of the best players in England and said he would love to play with Sheringham again. Certainly, he is a great forward who scores plenty of goals and setup plenty to. In Euro 96 he proved himself a great partner to Shearer in the England matches. My view is this is a great signing for United.
Dwight Yorke Number 19 Position Striker Born 3 Nov 1971
Bought by Aston Villa in 1989 for �120,000 the Trinidad and Tobago striker first played football for Villa in March 1989. He first faced United in 1990. In April 1997 Athletico Madrid bid 10 million for the player but it was not until September 1998 that Man Utd signed him for �12 million.
Paul Scholes Number 18 Position Forward/Midfield Born 16 Nov 1974
Paul signed for United in 1989 as a schoolboy and worked his way up through the youth system until in the 94/95 season he started to play for the first team. Paul is a very versitle player who is happy both scoring and setting up goals as well as securing the midfield. His obvious talent has earned him a place in the England team , where after only a few matches scored a goal.
Ryan Giggs Number 11 Position Midfield Born 29 Nov 1973
Ryan's first game was against Everton back in the 90/91 season but even though he had great skill he did not have the strength to play regularly in the first team. However, his great skill earned him a place in the 91/92 season. He has scored some brilliant goals for United and although has some matches when his form appears to be lost he always proves his critics wrong in a later match with his great shows of skill.
Nicky Butt Number 8 Postion Midfield Born 21 Jan 1975
Nicky signed for United in 1991 as a trainee player and played for the first time in 1992. When Paul Ince left United in 1995 , Nicky gained a permanent position on the first team side. Like Roy Keane , Nicky is one of those strong midfield players who is not scared of making a good challenge. Nick's football career has just taken had a great boost as he has been selected to play for England.
David Beckham Number 7 Position Midfield Born 2 May 1975
David only started playing regularly for United in the 95/96 season but since then this gifted midfielder has only got better and is now also a regular player in the England team. David joined United in 1991 as a trainee player , his first game for the 1st team was in a Coca-Cola cup tie in 1992 and his next big game was the Champions League match in 1994 against Barcelona. David then went on loan to Preston North End but was recalled to United due to alot of injuries in the 1st team and since then David has been a regular player for United with his great passing of the ball and long range shooting power, David has a big future.
Roy Keane Number 16 Position Midfield/Defence Born 10 Aug 1971
Man United's new captain following Cantona's retirement. Jack Charton said of Roy Keane "Roy is the best midfield player in the British Isles. He has everything a manager would dream about in Heaven". And its true Roy is a player who is involved in every part of a game , defence,midfield and attack. His aggression and power when playing for United must make other managers wished he had signed for them. In fact Roy first signed for Nottingham Forest in 1990 from a club in Ireland for �20,000 and it was in 1992 that United paid �3.75 million to bring him to Old Trafford.
Jordi Cruyff Number 14 Position Forward / Midfield Born 9 Feb 1974
Jordi's first taste of United was when he played for Barcelona against United in the 1994 Champions League. Jordi formed part of the great Spanish team but his game at Barcelona suffered when he father left the club. At the end of Euro 96 , Fergie signed an unhappy Jordi for �1.5 million. Jordi started well at United but with Fergie having so many players to choose from Jordi has lost his first team place.
Jesper Blomqvist Number 15 Position Midfield Born 5 Feb 1974
Brought to United for 4.4 million, Swedish left winger Blomqvist will probably take on the usual Giggs left wing role with Giggs taking a more freerole around the pitch.
Dennis Irwin Number 3 Position Defence Born 31 Oct 1965
Dennis was brought to Old Trafford in 1990 for �625,000 from Oldham Athletic. Four years earlier he had been sold to Oldham by Leeds for free. Since 1990 Dennis has remained a consistant addition to United's defence although because he is such a quiet person people can tend to forget about him. This would be unwise because Dennis is a vital part of the United team who plays on both the left and right of defence.
Jaap Stam Number 13 Postion : Defender Born 17 July 1972
Signed to United for a record fee of 10.5 million from PSV Eindhoven, this makes Stam the most expensive defender in the world. Jaap was signed to strengthen United's central defence and looks like a replacement for Pallister.
David May Number 4 Position Defence Born 24 June 1970
David signed to United from Blackburn for �1.4 million back in July 94. He had a very difficult start at United , with alot of people saying he was not good enough. Back in those days it was hard for David to get a place in the team because of the Bruce Pallister partnership. It was not until Steve Bruce left United that David started getting a regular place. In my view since then he has worked hard and performed well in the centre of defence and has proved a worthy signing for United.
Phil Neville Number 12 Position Defence Born 21 Jan 1977
Phil signed for United in 1994 , along time after his brother. His first real first team game was against Man City in Feb 1995. For a player so young who has been at the club for only a few years , Phil has done very well and now has a near regular first team place and was plays for England.
Gary Neville Number 2 Position Defence Born 18 Feb 1975
Gary signed for United as a trainee in 1991 and played in the youth team until 1994 when he has his first team debut against Coventry. Since then Gary has played in nearly every United game and helped United to acheive the Double Double. In 1995 , Terry Venables called Gary up to play for England and since then has played in nearly every England game.
Mikael Silvestre Number 27 Position Defence Born 9 August 1977
French under 21 star Silvestre, a centre-back who can also play at full-back, signed for Manchester United on September 10, 1999.
Ronny Johnsen Number 5 Positon Defence / Midfield Born 10 June 1969
Ronny was bought from a Turkish club (Besiktas) for �1.2 million and brought to Old Trafford to fill in gaps in defence and midfield. So far I believe Ronny is better placed in defence where his level headed attitude and quick pace means he can calmly win the ball.
Henning Berg Number 21 Positon Defence Born 1 September 1968
Berg joined Rovers back in December 1992 for just over �400,000. He is currently the captain of Norway and made his debut for them back in 1992 also. Alex Ferguson has been looking to sign this defender since 1988, he finally got his man.
Massimo Taibi Number 26 Position Goalkeeper Born 18 Feb 1970
The 1998/99 season saw him move to Venezia, where, as first choice 'keeper, his performances kept them in Serie A for the 1999/2000 season. He joined United for �4.4 million before the start of the new Italian campaign. Massimo will compete with Mark Bosnich and Raimond van der Gouw for the first-team place at United, with the added pressure of taking over from Peter Schmeichel into the bargain.
Mark Bosnich Number 1 Position Goalkeeper Born 13 Jan 1972
When Peter Schmiecal left United at the end of the 98/99, United signed out of contract Bosnich for free from Aston Villa Mark first played for UNited in 89-90 but did not get a work permit so he returned to Australia. It was only a couple of years later he joined Villa following work permit approval.
Raimond Van der Gouw Position Goalkeeper Born 24 March 1963
Following the brief stay at United of Tony Coton, United relied on Kevin Pilktington as there reserve goalie , but a lack of experience meant a more seasoned reserve keeper was required, hence the arrival of Raimond in June 1996. He his debut at a 0-0 Aston Villa game but owing to the fact Schmiecal is rarely injured does not get to many appearances. However, when he is in goal he can always be depended on.
Alex Ferguson Position : Manager Born 31 December 1941
Alex started as manager back in Nov 1986 after completing a very successful time at Scottish club Aberdeen. Lets face it we don't need to say how great a manager Alex is, just look at the list below of what he has helped win for the club. Even though he has done so much so many people have critisied him and the club, the sales of Ince , Hughes and Kanchelskis caused dismay amongst fans and when no new players were bought everyone thought United were doomed...how wrong they were. Alex helped build a new team based on new players some of which are now playing for England (Beckham , Neville brothers , Butt and Scholes). Alex has helped United win The FA Cup in 1990 , 1994 , 1996 , 1999 European Cup Winners Cup in 1991 European Cup Winners 1999 Premiership Winner 92/93 , 93/94 , 95/96 , 96/97 , 98/99 seasons Intercontinental Cup 1999 Coca Cola Cup Winners (old League Cup) 1992.
